Prayers needed tonight for a young couple...

While in town today, my mother and I saw a friend who told us some very sad news... Some friends of ours were looking forward to the birth of their first child some time in April. However, last night the mother went into labor and ended up having twins--both of which were....dead.... I was SHOCKED to hear the news and still find it hard to believe that this has happened... I'm so grateful that this husband and wife love the Lord greatly and have faith that this too fits into God's plan for their lives, but oh how sad they must feel tonight!

Please join me in praying for this young family (and the extended family) as they go through this hard time!

After hearing this news, the rest of the day seemed to be filled with twins...

Mother and I saw and talked to the father of twin boys in Sams', and then we saw a set of twin girls go by in another cart and, when we ran into an old friend of my moms', she told us that her daughter had been expecting twins in January and lost them both too...

It is amazing how much sadness there is in this world. May we each reach out and try to relieve even a tiny bit of it this day--with the Lord's love flowing through us.

"I need a bigger box... No, maybe a short and wide one would be best"...

Mother and I spent the afternoon helping Grandma and my Aunt Bev pack things away in boxes for the big moving day on Saturday. (We also got to see my other aunt, Peggy, and cousin, Kylie for a few minutes.) We pretty much worked on the kitchen things today and now, many boxes later, most of the cupboards are bare. My aunt worked on wrapping up wall decorations, and now the walls are pretty much bare too. Neither Mom nor I took our cameras along, so, sorry, no pictures this time.....

My dad cleaned grain today for friends that live almost 2 hours away. He got up really early and didn't get home until 9:00 tonight. They were so kind and fed him lunch and supper...

The boys worked on Andrew's cleaner some more (yes, they hope to have it done one of these days), and kept things running smoothly around here. Andrew even mixed up a batch of pancakes so they'd be ready to put on the griddle when we arrived home from SD. :)

This morning, before heading to Eureka, Mother and I did some shopping in Napoleon... We went to the Courthouse to get some 4-H books for Jacob to study, and then Mother dropped me off at the little thrift store there to look for "Scrub" tops (somewhat loose-fitting blouses with pockets in front) while she went to the bank and grocery store. I was so happy to find 4 tops--3 of which are very feminine and 1 which I hope to make so. :) As all of the scrub tops I've found are pretty low cut in front, I also bought some short-sleeved T-shirts to wear underneath them. While there, I looked through the skirts and found a couple, so it was a good shopping day. Believe it or not, that was the first time I'd ever been in there, but Mother had told me it was really a great little store, and now I must say I agree with her (again). On top of all that excitement, I was surprised to walk in the main room of the store and to hear someone say, "Miss Cora Bornemann..." in a friendly sort of way... It was our dear neighbor, Stacey. :)

Once I was done there, Mother said that the van had started making a strange noise, so she called the guys and they gave her some suggestions for what to do. It ended up just being a rock that was stuck on something and was scraping. When she backed up like the guys said, it must have fallen out, because the noise stopped then. We said, "Hooray" and were on our way.

And that, my dear friends, is the story of our day.

The flowers aren't blooming out of doors yet...

...so we decorated with "Pretend" flowers around the house today...

I did some major cleaning in my room today and am nearly done now.

Remember the sunflowers that were in that vase on top of the old trunk? Well, when I wanted to hang my pretty rose painting above the trunk...

...Mother agreed with me that the sunflowers had to go someplace else, as they didn't fit with the elegant, old-time theme in that corner at all.

So, they went here--to brighten up this corner of the room:

While going through an old suit-case full of fabric scraps that Grandma had given me, I found a small square of upholstery. When I showed it to Mom, she said right away that it would look really well on this tattered kitchen stool...

...and I must say I agree with her! :)
Lots of things happened around here other than that too, (like when a family came and bought a couple of young goats from us for their rodeo goat-tying practice,) but I don't have pictures of those things...

One thing that changed our plans for tomorrow was when Mom talked to grandma Marly and plans were made for Mom and I to go down to Eureka again tomorrow to help Grandma with packing and cleaning. Sounds like a busy day is ahead of us, so I'd best get some rest.

Before I go though, I'd just like to ask for prayer for my mom, as she's dealing with a bad infection in her finger and it's taking a long time to heal. She can't keep it in water very long and can't hand milk now either. It itches a lot too, so prayers for relief would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, dear friends~

Our inheritance~

Yesterday, some of our relatives and my family gathered at Grandpa and Grandma's house to go through the things Grandma had set aside, things that she hoped people would take if they wanted them. They can't possibly fit everything they have in their house into the apartment they're moving into next week, and they're not really wanting to have a sale, so this was how they chose to share their things with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren...

Here grandma Marly and mother are going through her sheet music... It was so fun to play a few of the new songs today in the few minutes of spare time there was for playing. :)

The greatest treasure that Grandma gave us children was one of her paintings!!!!! She put a number on each painting and then had us grandchildren pick out a number to see who got which one. Here Jacob's looking pretty happy with his beautiful Badlands scene...
A couple more treasures: This dutch oven and giant tea kettle used to belong to my dad's grandma Emma...
One of the things I was most excited about was a large something that is now setting in my room! I had to clear out the corner to make room for "It", and this is what my bed looked like there for a while...
"It" is an old trunk!!!!! I think it belonged to my great grandma, although I'm going to have to ask Grandma again to be sure, as there were so many things going on that day! Here I'm peeking inside, looking at--
--the lace vest and slip that was hanging inside! Grandma wasn't sure if these belonged to her grandma or her great grandma, so it's either something from my great great grandma, or my great great great grandma. How special!!! I love pieces of history!
My room's kind of crowded the way it is, but I just had to fit this in it too! The vase holding the sunflowers was my great grandmas, as I think was the sad iron on top. The box on top contains some old newspaper clippings that are all in German and a report card for my great grandma Emma, who obviously did very well in the second grade. :)
There were SOOOOO many more treasures (many things to tuck away up in the attic in my hope-chest collection), but those were the neatest in my opinion...
There is one more picture I'd like to share though---the one of the painting I received...
Isn't it so lovely??? I wish my grandma would start painting again.......

Most of Mothers' and my day was spent in trying to find homes for all our new treasures. As we brought home 3 boxes of books, we went through the bookcase and rearranged it and got rid of some not-the-best books to make room for the new ones. This is what our living room looks like currently...
That's about all that's new around here, outside of the official start to calving season. :) (One of Andrew's heifers had a cute, black bull calf.)
Sweet dreams and God bless~

Busy, busy day~

This is going to be VERY short, as we spent the day in Eureka going through lots of things and visiting some and got home late and did chores and unloaded the pickup and prayed are now in need of some sleep!

The end. :)

That's much better... Thank you Lord!

Today felt like spring! The sun was shining brightly and the balmy breezes were invigorating...
--Not quite the kind of weather that makes you want to stay inside and clean the house and cook, but that's what we usually do on Fridays, and that's what we did! Jacob (with a tiny bit of help from me) made a double batch of Mrs. Bartlett's Raspberry Muffins, and they are SO delicious!!!

We did have a nice visit from our friend Sarah and her 3 children this afternoon, so that was a nice break in the busyness of the day.

Andrew got back from cleaning grain around 6:30, so he was able to help us with chores tonight!!! :) I've been doing a lot of his chore-work these last 3 days, which involves carrying heavy pails of grain and water and throwing scratchy hay over the fences to the calves and goats, so it was really nice to have a break from that. I don't know how he does it all the time?

Tomorrow we're going down to Eureka to help my B grandparents with packing. They also want us (and the other children/grandchildren) to take a lot of things home, so it will be a full day I'm sure! The actual moving day will be next Saturday, so we'll be gone two weekends in a row it looks like...... Prayers for safety and wisdom (in deciding which things we have room for in our little house and which it would be best to leave) would be much appreciated!

I thought it was spring???

This morning, we woke up to a light dusting of snow over everything, and more falling through the air. However, when Andrew called the farmer he's cleaning for now, he said it wasn't snowing there, so Andrew headed south. He finished the one farmer and then moved to the farmer's father's farm and started cleaning there. Now he's heard that a couple neighbors want him to clean for them too while he's in the area, so I'm not sure if he'll get done tomorrow or not? It's always nice to have new customers, especially now that the guys will have 2 units to keep busy!

At home, life went on as it usually does. My dad went to get a load of hay home again and to do some business in town, but then he worked on Andrew's cleaner some more.

I finished up with the sewing project I've been working on for almost forever it seems (sewing the Velcro around the fabric that's going around the gravity table...). On average, my thread broke every other minute, (no matter what I did!) so it's nice to have that job done with!

I also went through the seeds we saved last year from our garden and made a list of them and then went through our favorite seed catalog (Bountiful Gardens) and marked down some suggestions for when Mother goes through it. It's amazing how fast our gardening season is approaching! Pretty soon we'll be able to dig in the dirt again. :)

Jacob spent some time thinking up a good name today for his entry in the "Name that buffalo" contest that I read about recently on-line. If you wish to give your name suggestion for the biggest buffalo in the world (the statue of one in Jamestown), you can go HERE. I didn't see any age restrictions or anyplace that said you have to live in ND to enter, so I think it's open to everyone...?

Also, if you like mystery pictures, two of Grace and Hannah's brothers have posted mystery pictures and you can guess what they are HERE and HERE. :)

Well, there's more I could say about our day, but I need to get some rest for our busy day tomorrow, so will post this and then hop into bed and listen to the wind howling and the wild geese calling.......................................

On birthday cake; bike riding; new fish and grain cleaning...

It was a peaceful day at home for Jacob and I...

Our parents went to town all day and didn't get home until 9:00, at which time Jacob and I had just finished the 2 hours worth of barn chores--except for feeding the cows. :)

Andrew got home a little after 10:00 from the grain cleaning job. He had some troubles, but got the job half done. He was pretty tired...

And now, I have some pictures to share with you!

Here's the kitty cake I made for our neighbor girls' birthday:

It was so lovely out this afternoon, Jacob and I just had to get outside for a while! We dug out the "New" old bicycles that Dad brought home from Grandpa and Grandma's place last Saturday. Jacob put air in the tires and we went for a ride around the farm and out to get the mail...
Aren't they neat old bikes? They're both Schwinns and are the bikes my dad rode when he was a little boy. :)

I looked out the window later in the day and saw our dogs enjoying the sunshine!
The best part of the day for me was when my parents arrived home with new fish! They bought 2 Neon Tetras (pictured below); 3 Guppies (our neighbor recommended them and I'm so glad she did, as they're really pretty. I haven't managed to get a good picture of them yet though, as they wiggle all over the place and blur the pictures!) My 3 Tetras from the first batch aren't quite sure about having so many new fish in the tank with them and kind of stuck together in their own little group for a while. They were happy to show the new fish what food was though when I fed them!

My parents also brought a snail home at my request! It's really fun to watch it explore its new territory at it's slow speed...
AND, they brought me 2 goldfish for my fish-bowl!!! I was so excited!

What a fun day!!!

Mystery picture...

There's a really fun mystery picture to guess on over at Hannah's blog today!
If you enjoy mysterious pictures, then she has a good one for you... :)

Honk, honk, squawk, honk, honk.......

This is the "Music" we're listening to as we get ready for bed tonight... The sound is coming from the hundreds (maybe even thousands?) of geese that have decided to rest for the night in our neighbor's field. I guess they're really having a nice reunion, as they all seem to be talking at once... I wonder if they'll get any sleep tonight? Then too, I wonder if we will? :)

It was a good day here. The sun was shining and the birds were singing cheerily...

The guys got my dad's cleaner pulled out of the Quonset and started it up. Andrew's planning to take it to a farmer's place tomorrow to start the big, busy season. My dad has many things to do in Bismarck, (or else he would do it) so he and my mom are going to the city together tomorrow. They have a long list, so it may be just Jacob and I for chores tomorrow night??? (Except for feeding the cows--which I'm sure my dad will do when he gets back!)

Mother prayed tonight, "...And thank you for the time today to get reacquainted with my kitchen..." After being gone for 4 days, things do change I guess!

I spent the first part of my morning (after barn chores were done, that is) decorating a cake for our neighbor girls' birthday party tomorrow, but had to stop in the middle and head over to our other neighbors' place to babysit, as the mother had to be in Bismarck at a certain time. I was there from 11:00am to 5:45pm, so I got my share of little-people-love today. :) And, when I returned home, I worked on the kitty cake again... I got interrupted again for supper, and then the evening milking, and just put the cake in the box a few minutes before family prayer time. I did get a picture, but you'll have to wait until tomorrow to see it as I need to get to bed now. Tomorrow sounds like another busy day. May the Lord help us all through it!

OH! One more thing! When I got home, my mom told me that the lady from the nursing home called and wanted to talk to me about dates for my CNA training, AND she said that I'm hired--as long as I pass the test after class and everything. :) Thank you for your prayers as I've been making this important decision which will affect all our lives in definite ways...... Your prayers are so very much appreciated!!!

"It" is....

...a large chunk of petrified wood! Here's another picture of it that shows the grain of the wood better:

Nathanael guessed it correctly and many of you were very close, and, in a way, correct when guessing a rock of some sort... Thanks once again for all the guesses!!! I very much enjoy hearing from you all and then looking at the same mystery picture and trying to see what you were seeing in it!

I looked up petrified wood on-line just now and saw that pieces this large are selling for between $200 and $500! I didn't realize that our new lawn ornament was that valuable. :)

It was a very productive day once again on the farm...

I made bread; ice cream; baked a couple cakes; made pizza; and tidied up the kitchen, again...

Mother was gone all day at class, but this was the last day, so it will be nice to have her back home again!

Dad and the boys worked on the grain-cleaner once again for most of the day... I thought I'd vaguely explain what our guys' grain-cleaners do, as I know some of you don't live on a farm and may not know what it's purpose is...

My dad (and now Andrew) will pull the trailer that has the grain-cleaner on it to a farmer's yard and will set it up by the farmer's grain-bins. Then, one auger takes the grain from the bin and delivers it into the cleaner. The cleaner then separates the large kernels of grain from the smaller ones and all the weed seeds--dumping the small kernels and weed seeds (called screenings) into another auger that takes them to the farmer's truck. The large, clean kernels go out another way--onto another of the farmers' trucks. It's a really neat process to watch, but it gets very dusty working with the grain all day and Dad and Andrew's voices usually end up being gravelly for about a month until they're done with the cleaning season.

Why does the farmer pay for their grain to be cleaned, you may ask? Well, they don't want to plant the small kernels (which may not grow) or the weed seeds (which will certainly grow into undesirable weeds)! My dad just had another call this afternoon from a farmer who has a 2-3 day long cleaning job, so the guys are really hoping to get going very soon!!!

There, now didn't you just want to know all that? :)

Everyone is enjoying spring!!!

Yes, everyone enjoyed the sunshine...

...Our chickens;

...Turkeys;

...Lady and some kitties;

...Even Sargent Jacob... :) (He's wearing our grandpa B's army hat.)
While I was out enjoying the fresh air and taking some fruit scraps down to the goats, I decided to pop into the Quonset to see what was all happening there...

Dad was welding something onto an auger while Andrew was working on a cable system to swing the auger out of the "building"...
Jacob meanwhile was drilling holes in Dad's grain-cleaner trailer and bolting down his new generator. Then he put anti-freeze in it and did some other things too, of which I don't remember.
It is so nice to see green grass again!
And now we can swing without getting snow in our shoes. :)
My dad went down to Eureka yesterday as his mom called at noon and asked if he could come down and be with them and his brothers as they all decided what each brother wanted of the things my grandparents needed to get rid of before they move to Mandan. This was one of the things he brought home--and is one of my favorite things. :) Isn't it a cute little wind-mill? It was racing in the wind all day...
Dad also brought home this... Oh, by the way, this is a mystery picture! If you'd like to guess what it is, please leave a comment with your guess. I'll wait to post any comments containing guesses until tomorrow night, when I shall tell you what "It" is. :)
And now, dear friends, I shall bid you farewell, good night, and sweet dreams. Oh yes, happy spring too!

There's yet another birthday girl this month...

My dear blogging friend, Rachel P. is turning 24 today! I've really enjoyed getting to know Rachel over the last few months and it's been fun to find the many things we have in common. I've been very blessed by the things she and her sister share on their blog, Young Homemakers---by the skills they share and by how open they are about their struggles and prayer needs...... If you haven't checked their site out yet, I'd highly recommend it. :)

"Happy birthday, Rachel!" I hope it is a VERY lovely day for you!!!
(and I'm glad you finally got to see what was in that yellow package! ;) )

Spring, spring, spring!!!

I was planning to share this with you sometime soon, and then I saw that my friend, Miss Jen (Blessed Femina on my sidebar) shared a link to it on her blog just a little while ago and decided that I would share it now too... :)

I like to sing this cheerful tune at this time of year (actually at other times of the year too, but it's definitely most fitting now!) It's from one of my favorite musicals, "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers."

I'm looking forward to the time coming in the near future when our barnyard is busy--in a regular tizzy........

I think that spring is finally here!

I'd like to share this poem with you that my friend, Grace wrote recently.
Enjoy!~

I think that spring is finally here!

I feel it in the breeze blowing thru my hair

I see it in sky and the trees

In the birds and the bees

My heart is singing, overflowing

With a sense of happiness and knowing,

That the things that once were cold and frozen

Will grow into what's been chosen

Last summer, a flower, then fading

Is now a seed in the cold earth.

Watching and still waiting

For a glorious new birth.

I will not think of darkness

I will not think of death

I will only think of the likeness

When Life blows the warmth of breath

A tiny sprout will grow up from the ground

The seed I thought was dead is found

much more glorious then the other

A life to share with one another.

Last summer's love is but a memory

Today is where I stand

And no matter what I see

Tomorrow is unfolded by the Master Gardener's hand.

"It" came!!!

...But, I will leave it up to my dear readers to decide which "It" I am speaking of in my blog title, because.....

"It", my dad's generator showed up this morning!

Also, "It"--the last snow of the Winter, arrived today as is evident in this picture: (It snowed a little bit all day long.) "Happy Spring to one and all!"
And, "It" was finally the day that the driveways were dry enough that our elderly neighbor lady wished for me to come up and trim her hair for her, which I did... She blessed me with some clothes, plus some cute pot-holders she sewed and a hand-towel that she'd crocheted the top onto. (She also sent some along for Mother as a gift--so sweet!) She, her husband and I had tea and cookies together and looked at pictures of their family. She also told me a really neat, old-fashioned hair-care tip, but I'll share that with you another time....
The last possible "It" that came today really, really surprised me!!! (This silly picture's included here just especially for you, Grace and Hannah!!! I really was surprised by your sweet gift, however, this photo was staged... :) )
"It" arrived in a little brown package...

...and "It" contained:
1 pair of home-spun and knitted mittens--that are so soft!,
1 bag of home-made maple sugar--that is so tasty!!!,
and 1 beautiful card and sweet note--that was so much appreciated!!!!!
"Thank you so much, dear sisters!!!" You made this day a very, very special one. :)
I am thanking the Lord tonight for all the special friends that He has blessed me with--in just under a years worth of blogging!
And, now that I've shared about "It" all, I'd best head for my pillow. Sweet dreams~

Where two or three are gathered together....

I hope to have time tomorrow to tell you about my interesting time at the nursing home this morning, but for now, I'm very tired and, as we'll be getting up early again tomorrow morning to get my mom off on the road to class, I decided to just share the following that I received from a friend this afternoon...

~Matthew 18:20~

"For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

Does this count?
Prayers for our family are always appreciated as we make decisions each and every day--some of them very much life-changing ones!

Did Noah Go Fishing???

I just received this and had to share it with you before heading out to the barn.... :) Have a great day!

~Did Noah Go Fishing?

A Sunday school teacher was teaching her young students
about Noah and the ark. She asked them what they thought
Noah may have done to pass the time in the ark for forty
days.

After waiting a few moments, the teacher suggested, "Maybe
he did a lot of fishing. How about that?"

One little boy gave her a funny look and said, "I don't
think so. It's kinda hard to fish with just two worms!"

Very short post!

Tomorrow's going to be a very busy day, but I'm excited for it to come! I'm going to the nursing home to "Shadow" some of the workers there to see if that kind of work is for me or not... Prayers for wisdom would be greatly appreciated! Then, in the afternoon, I'm going babysitting again. My dad's going to Bismarck to get supplies for the grain cleaner project again and also to look at some bred heifers I found on-line... Mom and Jacob are planning to start in the Algebra book... And Andrew--he's most likely going to be found in the Quonset most of the day, fixing; thinking; and building.... Lord willing though, we'll all be found gathered in our little living room for bed-time prayer tomorrow evening around 10:30. :)

Whether you're happy with the weather currently or whether you're not, I thought you may enjoy some thoughts on the subject!

I found these thoughts and quotes on-line just now and, although I could tell you about baking pumpkin bars with our last squishy pumpkin; or about getting the electric fence working again; or about cleaning the back fridge out; or about getting fresh water ready for my aquarium; or about babysitting for 3 hours this afternoon, I thought I'd post some food for thought instead. Enjoy! :)

And a poem for you, called, "Weather"

Whether the weather be fine,
Or whether the weather be not,
Whether the weather be cold,
Or whether the weather be hot,
We'll weather the weather
Whatever the weather,
Whether we like it or not!

While I'm talking about the weather...... I was wondering if you'd kindly pray for the people of Fargo, Linton, Jamestown and other surrounding areas this week as there's a real threat of some major flooding again this year as the snow melts away.

~Thank you!

The doings of the day~

The guys were once again busy all day with working on Andrew's grain cleaner in the Quonset. They're hoping to get it done this week, if all goes well.

Mom and Jacob are happy to be nearly done with Jacob's math book so they can move on to algebra... :)

In the later part of the morning, some friends came for some farm products and to visit for a while. The children loved watching my fish swim around and around, and watching them eat. I think a fish tank would make an excellent babysitting tool to have around when you have small children--as long as it's on a firm base, that is!

Speaking of fish, yesterday one of my fish (the male Molly) died, so that was sad. So far, the rest look really good, so I'm hoping it wasn't the water that made him sick...

It was such a lovely day today that the stock cows meandered out into the big part of our pasture. Also, these little guys climbed through the fence and decided to have some fun "Swinging"... :) Tomorrow morning, they'll most likely have a shocking experience--when we hook up the electric fence again!

This afternoon, I went over and babysat for the 3 little ones so Kristi could get some typing done again. She sent me this picture of Jimmy and I (plus a couple more) at the birthday party yesterday... Their children are just so cute!!! :)

When I got home, I helped Mother make supper. I fried up spaghetti in butter and Mom cooked up some zucchini, onions, and dill. Yummy!

And that's what happened around here.~

How was your day? Are you very much ready for spring to come too?

Sunday, March 14, 2010

What a lovely way to spend an afternoon!

I went to a birthday party this afternoon--a party that was held to celebrate our neighbors, Gary and Kristi's twins' first birthday! I got to meet several people I'd heard a lot about from Kristi, but didn't know, so that was fun... I really enjoyed Kristi's parents!!! They were as pleasant as I'd imagined them to be. :) (They even posed for a picture when I asked them if they would!)
Kristi's mom made the delicious birthday cakes pictured here: "Crazy cake" on the left and a tasty carrot cake, (on the right) which contained coconut and walnuts too... She even sent some cake home for the rest of my family to enjoy! :)

Here's most of the people who were at the party... I was very glad to have some time to talk with Gary's mother (in the green blouse) about working at the nursing home, as she's been working there for a few years now and could fill me in more about, well, everything.
Here's Kristi and the birthday boys:
James in the yellow M&M shirt and Michael in the red one...

Amelia (or MeMe, as most everyone calls her) was happy to help her brothers by blowing out their birthday candles!

"Grandpa", feeding Jimmie his ice cream...

Present opening time!
What a fun day!

~Thank you again, Gary and Kristi, for inviting me to the boy's party!!!

PS. The cake's gone. :)
