Hair, hair, hair...

And yes, this post IS about Prairie Days! :)
Do you remember about a week or two ago when I shared about that website with all the old-time hair styles? Well, when making last minute plans with the Dagleys for Prairie Days, I offered to do a demonstration of a few of those hair styles--doing it on mother or whomever wished to have their hair done--for about an hour. WELL, little did I know how many girls/ladies would like their hair done and that I'd spend a great portion of my day as a hair-dresser! It was lots of fun! :)
I did my own hair quickly (in one of the styles on the website) before we headed for the Dagley farm Saturday morning. Shortly after getting there, I set up my spot in the park (close to where the photo shoot was being held),
In the square, blue container below is some flax gel that I made--after our neighbors told us a while ago that when they were young, that's what they used for hair gel all the time. I gave out the recipe to anyone interested and used it on those who wanted me to...
I did my mom's hair first (I'm adding the last few touches in the picture below), while Hannah Stover (the bride-to-be) tried out the same style on her sister, Louisa...

It didn't take long for young ladies to gather around, asking for their hair to be done as well....
Pretty soon, I had some helpers...
...
One of my favorite styles is pictured here on Sarah S (also the brides' sister)...
As I was looking through the 400+ pictures that were taken on my mom and my cameras, I saw this one of "Hair" and thought I'd throw it in for variety...
(Mrs. Dagley doing "Uncle" Mike's hair)
After helping Louisa with a couple of curls that were coming down, I asked her how my hair was doing and she said a couple curls were sagging, and would I like her to pin them up again for me? She pulled out two pins, but then said that another curl was coming down then, and that curl connected to the next..... She decided to start all over and I really liked how she did my hair then in many, smaller curls.
And, once you're done with having your hair up, you can let it down and enjoy curly hair, as long as the humidity in the air permits...
I was surprised and honored to be asked to do the brides' hair the next day.
What a beautiful bride she was!
But alas, I'm getting ahead of myself, as I have many, many more pictures to share of Saturday before moving onto the wedding.......
It is late, however, as I worked in town again this afternoon/evening, so I shall post these and get some rest.
Look for more pictures to come in future posts~

A restful day at last...

Do you know what we did today? -----Not much, and it sure felt good to do it too. :)

We did shake up (literally--in a jar) a couple batches of pudding that we got from Grandpas' place when we cleaned out the cupboards. We had pistachio, cheesecake, chocolate-chip-topped dessert:

Then, this evening after chores, I had fun trying out a fancy hairstyle on Mother. I tried doing this on myself, but was having troubles with making the rolls, so my mom said I could practice on her. :) It'll take some practice to get all of the bobby pins hidden, I discovered, but it was fun and helpful to do it on someone else...
And now, for the mystery picture I took yesterday:

What are these?

I'll give you a day to think about it, and won't post any comments containing guesses until tomorrow night.
Happy guessing...!

The Prairie Days schedule is out...

After some discussions back and forth with the Dagley family, the Prairie Day schedule is now out and is published on the P.D. website (www.wix.com/prairiedays/2010). It's now only a week until the special event begins! How time does fly by....

I found a website a few weeks ago that showed how to do many old-time long-hair styles and, with Prairie Days just around the corner, I hope to have some time tomorrow to try to perfect one or two of them. :) If you're interested, you can visit Rapunzel's Resource HERE, and join me in experimenting.

This day was filled with cleaning the house and cooking good food in preparation for tomorrow--the day we rest and spend extra special time with God.

I have a joke to share with you soon--and a mystery picture, but as my computer battery is running low (a certain brother of mine is using my charger for his computer this evening.....), I'd best save those for another time.

Until then,
~Cora

True beauty~

~On the second day of blogging, my conscience said to me,

"Are you waisting time,

And can you blog-and do it hum-bl-y?"

Answer= My time will not be wasted if I can share things that are a blessing to others.

So, for today's' encouragement, I thought I'd share a chapter on beauty that has been very helpful to me in realizing what true beauty is. This is an excerpt from the book, "Harmony for the Heart", which I received 4 years ago when I graduated from our home school high-school.

A Chapter on Beauty~
Although my waistline measures 25 inches, and I weigh 110 pounds; if I have not God's gentleness, I am not beautiful.
And though my complexion is clear, and though I have no pimples, and though my skin is smooth and tanned; if I have not God's grace, I am not beautiful.
And though my hair is neither frizzy nor greasy, and though it parts only where I want it to part; yet if I have not God's kindness, I am not beautiful.
God's beauty doesn't depend upon my appearance, for it is beauty of spirit. It is gentleness and patience. It thinks first of others; it lets a friend interrupt. God's beauty sings while it presses dresses, and smiles at the crippled neighbor. It stretches a warm touch to a hurting sister. God's beauty listens to an overwhelmed friend.
God's beauty can't be purchased. I can't buy it by the yard from a bolt of lace; neither can a store sell it in a powder can or tube of lipstick.
God's beauty never grows old. But glossy hair will turn gray and fall out. A slim waistline will grow flabby, just as pink cheeks will fade.
But God's beauty can shine on a wrinkled face and live in the clasp of a trembling hand. It can still sparkle from faded eyes.
When I was ignorant, I tried to be beautiful by myself. But, when I understood God's ways, I realized that only God's spirit within me can make me beautiful.
And I may have charm, form, and beauty, these three. But the greatest of these is God's beauty.

I'm striving for true beauty today...
