Big floppy feet!

We're in the process of making something special for Prairie Days this year and it has something to do with the title of this blogpost!    You'll have to wait a few days to find out what "It" is though (or come to Prairie Days and find out in person.  ;)  )

Andrew went to Bismarck this morning to have his pickup worked on (there are a few limits to his shop-skills, or is it his tool supply?) and to pick up some groceries we need for this weekend.  Dad loaded up the loader bucket and hauled it to the Wald Brothers, so they can do some heavy-duty welding on it (it was starting to crack along a seam and needed to be fixed before hay-stacking begins!)

Later, Dad and Jacob went up to the pasture and went around the next cell fence, then moved the cows by themselves too.  Mom and I cleaned the kitchen up (it was a disaster!); made some Sky-high biscuits; and I weeded inbetween the rocks out front while Mom placed an online order for some fly-war weapons (aka: fly traps of various sorts!).

This afternoon, Dad cultivated corn; Jacob and I mowed around the house and I mowed the playground area.  The boys put more string in the weed-wacker for me and I wizzed around everything for about an hour.  They also got the push-mower running so I could go under the trees a bit.  Then the guys worked on the big baler.  Mom was working inside.  Later, I gave Jacob a haircut.  OH, and we moved the 2 bottle-calves down with the turkeys in the nice grassy pen.  What else?  Dad put the other loader on the tractor and then lifted Andrew and a ladder up to the top of the swingset so Andrew could get the ropes down.  We need to make new ones and hope to do that at the Dagley's this weekend, as their rope-maker is nicer than the one we borrowed to make the other ropes 3 or so years ago.  (We needed the little rings at the top-end of the ropes to make the new ropes with).  Then this evening, we made Big Floppy Feet, but, as I said before, I'll tell you about that another time!   I hope to get a big picture-post posted here soon.  I've been working on it for a couple days now.......

We voted...

I was voter #201 in our precinct.  :)  Sadly, the majority of people must still be ignorant about the truly important issues in this country today (and how to vote to change things) and just vote in the same people who are going to continue doing the same things that they've done to get our Country in the shape it's in today.   One day, people will wake up!    There was a bit of good news that Andrew shared with me just now---a man that Andrew knows and supports got the votes needed to be put on the ballot in November.

That was the most exciting part of the day.  The guys were working on hay.  The one bull broke out of the bull pen 3 times today (even though it's electrified!).  What to do???  Host a big barbecue?  ;)

I forgot to mention yesterday....

...that my folks and brothers sorted out and hauled up 2 bulls and put them in with our heifers in the pasture, plus put one in with our milk cow, Sally and the 2 cows that we left home with her to keep her company (one of which is our blind cow).

I babysat most of the day again today.  It was too cold and windy outside to spend much time out there, so we did inside things.  :)

The others here at home worked in the fields, I believe, and Mom spent some time getting weeds out of the greenhouse.

Oh, if you live in ND, please remember to get out and vote in the primaries tomorrow!  Several people we know are writing in Mr. Sorum's name for Governor.  Wouldn't it be grand to have his name appear on the ballot in November?

We are getting excited about Prairie Days (coming up this weekend)!   This will be the 10th time the Dagleys have hosted this fun event and will also be the 10th time the Bornemanns have attended.  ;)  I hope to see some of you there!!!  (The new-this-year website is: http://prairiedays.weebly.com/index.html ).

Hmmm... Do our local policemen think of us as friends or pests?

Either way, we seem to be keeping them busy here lately!

I wrote about our police incident yesterday (with the fence)...      I believe I told you a few weeks ago about Andrew having a Deputy come out to inspect 2 recent pickup purchases, to clear their titles...  Then too, I'm pretty sure I wrote about a neighbor and my dad talking to the Sheriff because of not being able to reach the farmer whose spray drifted on a very windy day and killed several acres of our crops...

Well, today Andrew got a call from the Logan County police officer as he was wondering if Andrew was aware that his pickup was sitting in West Lake (by Napoleon)?  Andrew had to then explain how he just traded that pickup to a fella on Friday, so it no longer is his pickup and no, he did not know that!  My parents and Andrew were planning to drive to SD to look at another double-wide mobile home this afternoon anyway, so they took pictures of the spot where the pickup had been.  It didn't look like it was in too deep of water, so hopefully there was no damage done.

Andrew later received a call from the young man who now owns the pickup, as I guess he wanted to apologize/explain.   Apparently, he'd driven a friend to Braddock last night for a concert that was being held there, and then, on the way home at 2:00AM, he fell asleep and the pickup went in the water.  He claims he was not drunk?

So, hopefully, that's all the dealings with the law that we'll have to have for a while now!

I spent a good portion of the day over with the neighbor girls.  Their dad had made chicken with Fajita seasonings on it which I'd never had before, but which was very good!   The girls and I went for a walk in the afternoon (meaning I pushed them in the stroller) and then we just sat on the grass for a while and enjoyed the cooler day, until Tracy Jo got hungry again.  :)

We had a turkey loss during the night.  ;(   Somehow, one of the corners of the pen came open enough for several to get out.  Whether they died in the rainstorm then or from the dogs and cats, we're not sure, but my family couldn't find 10 of them after searching all over.  2 of the ones they did find were nearly dead from cold and wetness.  They brought them all back inside to warm up and 1 of the 2 made it and the other did not.  So, I believe that leaves us with 10 live small turkeys.  The others from the first batch are still doing well, as far as I know.  Sad!  I'm thankful there are some that pulled through anyway.

God has a plan and, even when we don't understand it, we can trust Him.~

A home, cars, and a job for the police...

This afternoon, after resting; worshipping; singing and the like in the morning, we decided to head out on a short road trip....

When my parents attended a recent funeral, they sat and ate with some friends and also some friends of their friends.  These friends (once removed ;) ) mentioned that they'd recently built a house and needed to sell their double-wide mobile home now.    Andrew's at the age where he's thinking about getting his own home, so we went down to Westfield to look at it.   We visited for a while too, so it was not a short stop!   Andrew's not sure what he's going to do yet.  The house was really nice, but he'll have to talk to movers to see how much that would cost....to move a house 60+ miles.

From there, we pulled into Ken's Auto (they sell vehicles that have been in accidents), just to look at all their vehicles.  That was actually fun and I have some pictures, but haven't uploaded them yet.  I'll post them another time.  There was this one really red car that was so very short---even for me it would be short!  No wonder it got into an accident...  The person behind the car couldn't see it ahead of them!

After that, we decided to stop in at our Temvik property to pick up the oars we had stored there (to use with the duck-boat) for some inflatable rafts we had over at our other farm.  When we drove up to our house, we noticed that a former neighbor had fenced around our house property and had a horse in there, right by our house!  He kind of put up a little wire partially around the house, but the horse could just walk onto the porch if he wanted to.   Not right.  As my dad has had dealings with this fella before, he decided it would be best to call the Sheriff.  While we waited for a Deputy to arrive, we went exploring inside.  Jacob didn't really remember it, as he was pretty small when we'd left, and I guess he hasn't been along when we've stopped there for things before.  Our former large, beautiful blue house is pretty much ruined now, due to 13 years of not being lived in (shingles blew off and the rain did major damage).    It's pretty much in the same condition we found it in when we moved in 20 years ago and started remodeling it.   It was a hard thing to leave that home after spending so many happy years in that house (Jacob was actually born there), but we really wanted to have animals and, living in town, even a small town has its limits to that.  So, we all agreed we wanted to raise animals more than we wanted to stay in our big house, and then rented a farm for 5 years.  From there, we wanted to buy that farm, but it wasn't for sale to anybody, so we looked around and found the farm God had for us----our current home.  We never sold the big blue house as we always wanted to move it, but that all takes money, and now it will probably have to be torn or burned down----after we take the good windows out.

But, about the fence....  The Deputy Sheriff came and got the needed information.  He was just about to go when a pickup, pulling a stack-mover with a load of hay on it, came driving up the gravel street.  (Yes, Temvik is a VERY small town---maybe 7 people living there now?)  It "Just so happened" (actually, I know it was God that brought him!) that it was the man who owned all the animals that are all over town, and who'd done the fencing around our property without asking.  The Deputy talked to him and then had Dad come over and they talked for a while.  The man said he just wanted to keep the grass down, but agreed he was in the wrong for not asking, and he said he'll take the fence down.  The Deputy told us he'll check next week to make sure it's been done.  He also had further business with the man, as he'd fenced off/over one of the roads in town so his animals could graze there too.   Hmmmm....

So, it was an interesting day!  My dad bought us a treat of ice cream bars at the grocery store in Linton and we got home just in time for evening chores.

I'll try to post pictures soon.~

The turkeys are ALL outside tonight!

This has been a very busy day!

My dad went to Bismarck this morning for a dentist appointment and to get some supplies, amongst them, a window for my car!  He saved me a lot of money by finding one at a junk-dealer.  It was tinted, so he and the boys got that all scraped off of there and installed my window this afternoon.  Hooray!!!  I LOVE living with handymen.  :)

Mom spent a good portion of her afternoon going through beef, deciding what was fit for humans and what was only good for dog/cat food, as Jacob discovered this morning that, somehow, our freezer in the shop got unplugged and the meat was thawing/thawed.  Not good.

I planted the pepper plants Mom bought a while back.

The boys, Mom and I worked on getting a pen ready for the older batch of turkey babies (they're over half grown already!) and then the boys caught the turkeys one by one and held them so I could clip one side of their wing feathers (something we'd never done before, but I found a good explanation on a you-tube video!).  We want them to stay in their pen!  So far, it's working.

Then, we moved the pen to a nice grassy area, washed the waterer out and moved the baby turkeys out of our kitchen into the bright sunny world.  At first, they were petrified and just stood in a group, not moving.  But, by tonight at chorestime, they were all milling about, pecking at the grass or their feed and checking out their wings.  Hopefully they'll huddle together tonight and stay warm enough.  It's pretty nice out now (I'm leaving my bedroom window open all night), so they should be ok.

Mom and I (and Jacob, a little bit) cleaned the house (even under the kitchen sink) and cooked a feast.

The boys worked on Andrew's newest pickup for most of the morning.

The guy who was interested in trading vehicles with Andrew came again today and they did the swap.  He brought a friend along and that young man now wants to buy our old Ram, but he has to wait until he gets his paycheck to pay for it, so they'll be back again sometime next week.  He has another friend who may be interested in Andrew's Charger.  As the saying goes, "It's not what you know so much as who you know".....

I'm trying to remember what else went on around here today..........  Let's see....

I discovered a couple of strawberries that are turning red!

Oh, and I went in the ditch with the 2-wheel drive pickup this morning, as the trail up to the pasture is so very muddy and I just slipped in.  Thankfully, I wasn't going too fast, so it wasn't really dangerous and, thankfully, after a lot of  rocking the pickup back and forth (the ditch was wet and muddy from the rain last night) and maybe some pushes from angels, I got out again, so I didn't have to call someone to come pull me out!

Also, one of the rosebushes in front of the deck decided to bloom this year!  This is our 9th Summer here and this is the first time it's bloomed!  Why did it decide to this year?  I have no idea...

Well, that's all I'm coming up with now.  I guess that's enough for one day!

Eggsplosion in the kitchen!

Phewwy!  While watching a movie tonight, we pushed the pause button upon hearing a loud "Pop" coming from the kitchen.  After Mom looked around briefly and didn't see anything, we got back to our video.  Then, not too much later, my dad all of a sudden said "An egg exploded"!  He was sitting closest to the kitchen I guess and smelled it first.  Yuck!   Apparently, someone gathered an egg that was at one time being set on, as the inside of the egg was all black.  Gross.

Outside of that, this day was pretty nice and the RAIN was WONDERFUL!!!   So needed.  Not on the newly cut-down alfalfa, mind you, but even at that, our guys are saying it is WONDERFUL!  We needed rain so badly here.  Thank you, LORD!  The boys think that newly cut alfalfa is a rain magnet?

I watched "My" little sweeties again today.   We're thinking little Tracy Jo is starting to teeth now, so she was uncomfortable the first half of the day, but seemed to improve as the day went on.  Johanna was tired this morning, but took a very long nap this afternoon and woke up all sunshiny, ready to play "Catch-me-if-you-can"!

Andrew had a guy come look at his pickup today and that young man has a friend who may also be interested in buying Andrew's Charger.  Time will tell....

Life is never ever dull around here, for which I'm grateful!

Andrew has returned!

He made it just in time for the 7:00PM JBS Constitutional training/meeting in Napoleon, which Mom and I also attended.  Dad was still working on cultivating corn and Jacob stayed home to do the milking and etc...    I learn more every time I listen to the class.  I just wish more people were aware of these things that it used to be rare to find a person not well versed in!  I still have so much to learn, I know.

The first part of the day though, after milking Sally this morning and taking care of the turkeys, I spent watching "My" girls.  :)   We had a little band going, mainly with a slide whistle and train whistle.

I need to get to bed now though, as I'll be watching them again in the morning...

I do have a prayer request before I go....  Just recently, we found out about a bug that is wiping out people's alfalfa in our area.  Dad just a couple days ago discovered the signs of this bug infestation in our alfalfa too.  The leaves are turning black.  This could be very devastating in so many ways.  Please pray for us to have wisdom in how to deal with this---if there is a way?  Anyone have ideas?

"What happened to your car window, Cora?"

That's what my dad asked me this morning after coming in from outside.  I really don't know what happened and neither does anyone else.  Just sometime between last nights' chores and this mornings', the passenger-side rear window imploded!    Now I have 2 windows that need fixin'.....(The other one just doesn't go up and down.)

Our Organic inspection went really well, thankfully!  :)   The inspector came at 10:00am this morning, and didn't leave until nearly 2:00pm.  She joined us for a quick lunch.

We're quite excited about the prospect of Andrew returning home tomorrow!

Also, tomorrow, my parents will go to our friend, Jeff M.'s dad's funeral in Napoleon, and then tomorrow evening at 7:00pm, we'll attend the first of a set of three "Constitution teaching" meetings, taught by our friend, Mr. Stevens (from Jamestown).   Everyone is most welcome to join us there (at the old school building in Napoleon.)

Jacob took all the guards off the hay-head this afternoon to replace them.  Dad went to a local meeting tonight about web-water.  Mom kept busy with household chores.  I worked in the greenhouse and tilling in the garden until it started to rain for a bit.  I'm also working on getting a big area smoothed out (it has a lot of big clumps of sod/weeds that won't break up) so we can plant our squashes there.....

The little turkeys are cheeping and cheeping.  They don't like their light being turned off at bedtime, but eventually they do settle down and go to sleep, thankfully!

We were sailing along...

After a busy, hot day of working outside mainly (garden for me and the shop for my brother), Jacob and I decided to go up to the pasture for a cool (literally) adventure.   We knew there was a duck-boat that our hunter friends left up there a couple years ago near the flowing-well and which, when the water rose so tremendously last year, got left for lost in the murky lake (it's name is officially Stink Lake and it sometimes lives up to that name).     Andrew had said he'd seen it near the waters' edge a while back, so we decided to go in search for it and to see if we could bring it home to fix any leaks which might be in it....

We walked along the waters' edge only a short time when we saw what looked like a shiny triangle directly North of where we were standing.  We went to investigate further.  Sure enough, it was the boat----one corner sticking up out of the water and the rest submerged under a layer of green mossy slime.  It was about 10 feet out in the water, so Jacob and I took off our shoes and socks; Jacob rolled up his pant legs and we stepped into the icky water, which Jacob described as the same look and texture of rhubarb sauce!  :)  Thankfully, the water was only about knee-deep where we were. First, we got the boat flipped right side up again, then took it ashore to dump out all the mud and moss.  We wanted to find out if it had any leaks before hauling it home, so into the water went the boat and we decided, after not seeing any noticeable leeks, to hop in and take it for a spin.  We did not find the oars and figure they  must have floated someplace else, so we tried paddling with our hands.   That didn't work so well!   Jacob remembered then that we had 2 shovels in the pickup we'd brought, so (as I had the slip-on shoes), I went and got them....

We had fun!  We paddled over to the flowing-well island and then made our way to shore, as it was getting close to supper time and we still had to get the boat loaded.  (I'm guessing it's 10'x4', being approx. 1 1/2 feet deep, with a flat bottom---basically a big box.)  We got it loaded and home without too much difficulty.  We never did find any leaks, PTL!

That was the most unusual part of the day, although we did get a call from a neighbor this morning, saying that 5 of our bulls had walked into his driveway this morning!   Thankfully, he was able to get them in a pen and Dad went with the trailer and hauled them home.   It's getting to be that time of year when the bulls don't like staying put.  Uggg.

Please pray for all to go well in the morning, as our Organic Inspector is coming to, well, inspect.  This is kind of short notice, as my dad had to call our Inspection agency this morning to tell them of a problem we now have so they could come out and investigate, so she'll just do the regular inspection at the same time.   The problem?  Well, a big farmer (meaning he farms thousands of acres!) who farms next to our field sprayed his field on a windy day and some of the spray drifted into our field, damaging about 10 acres of crop.  It's not just this years' crop though, because now those acres won't be certifiable for 3 years again!  Not good.....

Even with difficulties, we are so blessed!
