Early birthday presents, and some other things...

As Jacob mentioned in his post today, he and I were home alone for most of the daylight hours, while our dad was trucking and Mom and Andrew were in Bismarck.

We spent a good portion of our day on Jacob's schoolwork, first cleaning out his desk and organizing things. We found this little windmill (from our grandparents house-cleaning project) in the process, so as part of Jacob's patience lesson for the day, he worked on assembling the windmill tower, which has a lot of teeny tiny screws...

This afternoon, I tried a new recipe and made Pumpkin Butter. Here it is right after I added the spices. It tastes very delicious and the only bad part about it is that it can not be canned, so we'll either have to freeze it or eat a lot of it in the following weeks!
Mother and I ordered this DVD last week, after Mrs. Dagley told us about it... It looked like a good thing to have in our library of resources. I haven't had time to watch all the demonstrations yet, but was pleased with what I saw of Mrs. Rothkops' instructions...

And now, about the birthday presents...
Andrew and Jacob's birthdays are a week apart in November, but as Andrew was going up to Bismarck today to get truck parts for Dad, my parents decided to get the boys' big presents today and to give them to the boys right away......
Here they are with brand new sheets for their beds (that's not the big present though), stripes for Andrew and little animals on ice skates for Jacob. :)
Their big presents were:
NEW MATTRESSES FOR THEIR BEDS.
The ones they had before were really old, worn out mattresses that had come from the sleeper in Dad's old semi.
As Andrew already new about the surprise, he and Dad decided to surprise Jacob with his present and proceeded and suceeded in this way:

Jacob on his old, squishy mattress (both the boys' beds are up in the air.)
Andrew's new firm mattress...
After getting the mattresses up, it was time to figure out money matters. We also voted this evening and will get our ballots in the mail tomorrow...
I have one last picture--Mother doing the supper dishes...
Oh, and PS. It is snowing!!!

I don't know about you, but I'm not looking forward to doing chores this morning! Ah well, we shall have to get used to it, shan't we?

Dawn looks wonderful!

I'll bet Andrew and Jacob are so glad to get new mattresses!

I like the funny way Jacob was surprised with his present. I'm still smiling.

We were just talking about mattresses on the way into town because we saw a *very* ugly one for free and Grace and Mama thought it was the best thing ever and that we just HAD to get it... I thought it was the ugliest thing I ever saw! (We did not get it :)

I think why Grace thought it looked so comfy is because for the past eh... 5 1/2 years I think we (us children) have slept without matresses :)! Except David he does have a mattress that resembles Jacob's "before" photo lol!

We heard that there was snow storms in the dakotas- is there?
We got a little "snow" back in October but it was hardly anything.
We did have HUGE winds though (60 MPH and up!) 3 very VERY large limbs split off one of our trees near the house-- it just brushed our clay oven but did not crush it. Grace was just about to go out to the bakery when they fell and she had to run around the house because she could see them cracking off but was unsure where they would fall. They would not have hit her but they were very close! The almost all the shingles blew off one section of our roof so that has to be repaired before winter sets in!

Well I'm going to get going-- enjoy this somewhat long comment!
