A poem in honor of the men who fought for (and are fighting for) the freedom of this country~

~Freedom Is Not Free~
by Kelly Strong

I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
and then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of TAPS one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That TAPS had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

Hello dear Cora :)

I thought it would be nice to leave you a. . . (ugh, a mouse trap just snapped in the basement) . . .a comment because I have not in a little while and I am going to be busy this weekend.

Thanks so much for entering my giveaway :) and you happened to be the first one too which gives you an extra entry :)

I was thinking about memorial day yesterday and about how everyone just goes on and on about how wonderful our freedom is, but really it is quite sad. All I can think about is the poor people who died, and not just the americans but the people in other countries too. Sometimes it seems like the americans forget about them but I don't think I ever can. I can't stop war and fighting but I certainly can pray for everyone involved in it. Thank you Lord for that!

If you read my blog post yet, then this is old news to you :P but I am going to spend tomorrow night and Thursday at Rebecca's house (my sister) her and I are going to do sewing together. It would be fun if Grace came along too, but she is using that time to make something for Rebecca's b-day which is on the 13th. I am so looking forward to it! These are the kind of things that I think really build my relationship with both Rebecca and Steve (my brother-in-law). When they first were engaged and then married there was so much adjusting that we did some totally stupid things. Now, we can look back and laugh about it with each other and shake our heads! That's why I liked that one youtube you posted on your blog one time about the "Fair Maiden of Fenwood" even though it had that one part where one guys pushes the other guy. That was actually one of my favorite parts because I think I know what they were trying to portray. There was times like that for sure in those first days/months/years of my sister's engagement and marriage. Not physically like that, but those same emotions :)
Wow! how did I get on that subject! I must be tired, I'm so rambley when I'm tired!

XOXO,
Hannah of Marilla Heights <3
